Antonio Aimi, curator of the exhibition

Florence - Antonio Aimi, curator of the exhibition Peru, 3000 years of masterpieces, is an Americanist specialised in the interpretation of the sources (finds and texts) of the Pre-Colombian cultures from an anthropological, historical and aesthetic angle.

After initial researches in ethnomedicine (Peru, 1978), he studied the Amerindian exhibits of the eclectic collections of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. He was curator of three separate exhibitions on Amazonia (Civiltà dell'Amazzonia, Lerici, 1992; I popoli delle penne, Monza, 1993; Il mito del disegno, Milano, 1995), and classified the Pre-Columbian exhibits in the Castello Sforzesco of Milan. He studied the figurative language of the sculptures of the proto-classical cultures of western Mexico and the problems posed recently in Europe by the rethinking of the approach of the ethnographical and/or "other" art museums. Beyond this, his study of the texts has led him to the discovery that the "official" version of the Aztec vision of the conquest of Mexico was a brilliant invention on the part of Cortes himself.

From 1984 to 2002 he was a consultant on the Pre-Columbian Collection of the Castello Sforzesco in Milan, curating the layout of the same in 1990 and 1999.
