In the pre-Hispanic cultures of Peru, clothing was one of the fundamental symbols of an individual's status, and consequently of ethnic and social identity. The importance of these fabrics, however, did not cease upon the death of the person, since the mantles and cloths in which the deceased were wrapped guaranteed the persistence of his or her identity in the afterlife.
